Single Elimination

Format

Pool play - Pool play consists of all teams being put into pools of 7 or 8 (can do smaller pools if needed). Each team plays all other teams in their pool once. We suggest games to 15, win by 2, cap at 21 - this should take roughly 12-15 minutes per game. See the game order resource for more information.

Bracket play - Use results from pool play to determine seeds for the elimination bracket. Make sure you have a system to record and calculate rankings. See the calculating and reporting scores resources. Bracket play should be a best of three game series to 15 or 21 (dependent on timing). Each round will take roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Schedule

8:45am - 9:30am: All teams arrive to check-in and warm-up
9:45am: Opening announcements
10:00am - 12:00pm: Pool play
12:00pm - 12:30pm: Lunch break
12:30pm - 5:00pm: Bracket play

Double Elimination

Double elimination bracket gives a team the chance to come back and win after a loss since they mustlose twice! The first-round winners proceed into the Winner bracket and the losers proceed into the Loser bracket. The Winner bracket is conducted in the same manner as a single-elimination tournament, except that the losers of each round "drop down" into the Loser bracket.

Some rounds of the Loser bracket can not occur until a Winner round has happened. A 16 team double elimination bracket is 8 rounds opposed to 4 rounds if it was single elimination. Plan for time accordingly!

King of the Beach

This format is a really fun and social way to run a tournament. Players sign up individually and will team up with a bunch of different partners. As the day goes on players will be grouped with people of similar skill levels.

Format

To start:
  • Players are organized into pools of 5 people (experienced players will be spread across pools)
  • Each person in your pool is your partner for 1 game to 21
  • Total points earned are used to divide teams into different divisions for round 2
Next rounds:
Same format with rearranged pools based on points from round 1
King Division - made up of the top 2 players from each pool
Queen Division - made up of the middle players of each pool
Jack Division - made up of bottom 2 players of each pool
After each round the top 2 from each King and Queen pool move on and the bottom 2 of each Jack pool moves on. This continues until there is one pool for each division.

The finals:
The final round takes places once each division has been winnowed down to 1 pool. In the end, there is a King(overall winner), a Queen (intermediate winner), and a Jack (overall loser).
